GÁBOR FINTA

  • Gábor Finta was born and educated in Hungary. His post-secondary musical studies between 1963-1970 led to a post-graduate degree in piano, choral conducting and music education from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. He also studied at the International Musikseminar in Weimar, Germany.

  • After graduation, he taught at the Liszt Academy’s Teacher Training Institute, later becoming the director of the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Miskolc. Between 1976-1981, he wrote weekly music reviews for the daily paper Északmagyarország.

  • Since immigrating to Canada in 1982, he has taught piano, theory, chamber music. His students have won many prizes in local and provincial competitions, including the 1991 Ontario Young Artist Competition. He has conducted several community orchestras and has appeared as soloist in Ottawa, Brandon, Calgary, London and Brockville. He is a longtime member of the -->Ontario Registered Music Teacher's Association and an Honorary Member of the Kodály Society of Canada.

  • Mr. Finta is also in demand as an adjudicator. He has often judged choral and piano competitions both in Hungary and Canada and has examined for the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto for seven years. He has been teaching Kodály Music Education classes at several Canadian Universities. Mr. Finta teaches harmony and history and counterpoint at the University of Ottawa summer school, preparing students for RCM examinations. He also teaches piano at Carleton University.

  • His compositions have been performed in Canada, Hungary, Romania and Japan and include pieces written for piano, orchestra, voice, chorus and various solo instruments. His works have been performed at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival as well. He is a member of the Society of Canadian Composers.

  • Gábor Finta is the author of the PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HARMONY and the CONSERVATORY HAMONY (Grade 3) textbooks written for students wishing to study harmony and write exams at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto or other, similar institutions.

  • In 1998/99 he spent a full year at Algonquin College studying computer programming and website design.
