EAR TRAINING AND HARMONY STUDIES


These pages will help music students to improve their skills in recognizing intervals, chords, etc. The tests correspond to the requirements of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto but in some respects go further (e.g. the use of harmonic intervals and seventh chords in the Advanced page). The areas covered are:

  • Interval recognition both in melodic and harmonic form (all grades).
  • Chord recognition (triads and seventh chords) from grade Grade 6 up. The Advanced "Grade" gives you a chance to work with sevents chords in root position - and later we will introduce their inversions, as well.
  • Cadences can be found on the pages starting with Grade 8.
  • Melody playbacks created a special problem. We can not listen to your playback (most likely you do not even have your piano in the same room as the computer) so we had to find another way of letting you know if you were doing this right. Our solution is that you will see three versions of the melody you have heard and you would have to pick the right one.
  • Harmony studies will help you improve your aural recognition of harmonic progressions.
